Nargö, a D5/T5 Multi-Cache is at least a full-day’s adventure of Naissaar, one of Estonia’s largest islands. Covered in protected coniferous forest, Naissaar has a surprisingly long history of military activity, which can be seen in the cemeteries of British sailors from the Crimean War, Soviet bunkers, and deep-sea mine anchors.
If you are brave enough to choose this journey — add a flashlight, some adventurous friends, and your survival skills to the packing list.
The fascinating ruins of the island will bring you back to Tsar times when Naissaar was established as a military stronghold for the defence of Tallinn and St. Petersburg. When you hunt for the cache, you will discover coastal batteries built more than 100 years ago as well as Soviet era fortifications.
To get there, you can board a regularly scheduled trip from June through September that takes just over an hour. There are several different methods to conquer Nargö:
- Soviet army truck (available when you book a tour)
If your trek takes a few days, no worries! Overnight camping on the island is allowed.
To solve for the final coordinates, visit each stage then find a combination of black painted letters and numbers. Yes, math is required and you may want to bring a notebook to write out equations, but you do not need to be a mathematician to solve for “x”.
We had a very nice walk on the island. While caching we had the opportunity to see some of Naissaare’s hiking trails and learned a lot about Naissaar. The cache itself was very cool and I would recommend it to even non-geocachers. We had to do two trips to the island, but that’s okay, because we love sailing! On our second trip we had a strange feeling the whole time. We saw tracks before us and when logging we discovered that we weren’t the first loggers that day. Special thanks to ademox and shadow! Without their help I wouldn’t be logging this cache now. TFTC
Wonderful island, lovely weather, every step along the carpet of porcini and chanterelle mushrooms…and somewhere in the middle – an outstanding military site. Thanks to the cache owners for the excellent two day adventure! One big Favorite Point also! FITW LeXeR and Vinedi
My dad, vadisj already found this cache and he told me lots of things about it that I didn’t believe! Haha. But, when we were searching for the cache, I found out that everything he said about this cache is true — scary, big, old and amazing. This 2 day expedition was one of the best adventures of my life! Many thanks to the cache owner and I am really looking forward to finding all their other hard and crazy caches in Latvia! By the way, it took us about 30min to find the cache, because we didn’t read the hint ;D Found with Valdisj, palepro, Andisj and Arnis.
