5 easy conversation starters for geocaching events
Starting a conversation with someone you don’t know can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Just remember, most people at geocaching events are expecting to meet new people! In case you need a little more encouragement to strike up conversation, here are a few tips you can try out at the next geocaching event that will spark some interesting and enjoyable conversations!
1. Keep your intro simple
Sometimes the best introduction is the simplest of them all! Simply introduce yourself, ask the other person’s name (or username!) and ask what brings them to that event!
Pro tip: Don’t forget their name! One trick is called “meet and repeat!” This is where you use the person’s name in the next sentence or two so you’ll remember it. For example, “How long have you been geocaching, Bryan?”
2. Find something in common
Luckily there’s a good chance that if you’re meeting at a geocaching event, you’re both into geocaching! If you feel a little awkward asking personal questions right away, use your environment and surroundings to create conversation.
Pro tip: Avoid questions that can be answered by yes or no. Asking open-ended questions are great conversation builders!
3. Ask about their passions
Studies show that our favorite topic of conversations is ourselves. So odds are, if you let the other person talk about themselves, they will think you are fascinating! You can ask about how they discovered geocaching, their favorite part of the game, or their funniest geocaching story to get them chatting!
4. Arrive on time
If you’re one of the first to arrive, other attendees won’t have already formed conversation groups, so it will be easy to meet people. As more people arrive, you can continue to introduce yourself, but you can always fall back to the first people you met!
5. Bring a friend
You don’t have to go it alone, just be sure you don’t spend the entire time chatting only with each other! Bringing a friend can help give you more confidence to start a new conversation, knowing that you have a support system nearby. Plus, if you bring a friend that’s new to geocaching, it’s easy to start a conversation with other attendees about their best piece of advice for new cachers!
