Today, we release a new country/regional souvenir for the Åland Islands! If you have found a geocache in the Åland Islands, you automatically receive the souvenir on your profile.
The Åland Islands is a sweeping archipelago perched in the Baltic Sea. Finland’s smallest (and only Swedish speaking!) region, this island province is comprised of one large island, Fasta Åland, and over 6,500 skerries.
Since skerries are small, rocky islands, generally too small or harsh to be populated, most caches are placed on Fasta Åland, and among them is Sjökvarteret, our Geocache of the Week!
The third highest Favorited cache in the Åland Islands, Sjökvarteret offers an idyllic snapshot of island life in the Maritime Quarter. This is a living marine center, featuring boat building, a smithy and other traditional crafting activities, as well as a museum.
Cachers can take in the relaxed atmosphere with a stroll through the traditional boat harbor, try their hand at boat building, sample Northern delicacies at the cafe, or visit with some friendly reindeer!
Those who wend their way out to the cache are also greeted with a picturesque seafarers’ chapel.
Although the cache isn’t located on the chapel itself, you can stop by and offer up a prayer to the Geocaching Gods. Though you shouldn’t need much of their help—with its low terrain and difficulty rating, this cache is all about location!
We know geocachers love country and regional souvenirs and we do too! We are releasing at least one new country/regional souvenir per month starting in January 2019. These new souvenirs will be featured alongside Geocaches of the Week in each region and shared on the third Wednesday of each month. Check out all of the Geocaching souvenirs here.
