Cache In Trash Out® (CITO) announcement for 2020

Earth is a tiny blue dot suspended in the vastness of space. It is home to liquid water, breathable atmosphere, abundant flora and fauna, and the only geocaching community in the universe.

Since we live on the only planet—so far!—with geocaches, geocachers understand how important it is to protect it. Cache In Trash Out® (CITO) is an environmental initiative supported by the geocaching community. Since 2002, CITO has helped preserve cache-friendly spaces. In that time, more than 470,000 people have volunteered at over 24,000 events in 124 countries.

Based on all the great events hosted last year, Cache In Trash Out® (CITO) souvenir moments will, again, last two entire seasons! This year’s CITO dates are:

CITO 2020, Season 1
Sunday, March 1 through Sunday, May 31, 2020
That includes all of March, April, and May!

CITO 2020, Season 2
Tuesday, September 1 through Monday, November 30, 2020
That includes all of September, October, and November!

About our souvenir:

Twenty years ago, geocaching was born. Thirty years ago, the Voyager 1 spacecraft turned its camera back on the solar system and took a stunning photo of the Earth from 6 billion kilometers away. This image, the Earth suspended as a mote of dust in a beam of sunlight, is a poignant reminder of Earth’s unique place in the universe.

Our home may be one among billions of planets in our galaxy, orbiting a star that is one among a septillion stars in the universe. On the grand cosmic scale, it may be unremarkable. But to us, it is home, the only one we, and everyone around us, has ever known.

Voyager’s image is a reminder of our responsibility to protect Planet Earth, and our CITO 2020 artwork is inspired by this photograph. We hope it will inspire geocachers, and serve as a reminder of the essential work that we do every time we CITO.

How can I earn both CITO 2020 souvenirs?

To earn the CITO 2020, Season 1 and the CITO 2020, Season 2 souvenirs:

  • Attend or host any CITO event during each of the two seasons.
  • Remember—only one souvenir per season. But feel free to attend or host as many CITOs throughout the year as you wish!

We’ll highlight great ways to expand your CITO in our blog, newsletter, and social posts, so stay tuned.

What are some examples of out of this world CITOs?

CITO doesn’t have to be just picking up trash. Check out some of the great CITO events hosted by the community last year:
