As we look back on twenty years of geocaching history, we decided to revisit some of our favorite Geocaches of the Week from years past.

This week we’re turning the dial back to the first week of September 2014, when we featured Cadillac Ranch Cars (GC4K7Y3). Almost six years later, the cache is still bringing joy and smileys to all geocachers who find it.

The cache is named for the art installation that it is hidden in: Cadillac Ranch Cars. It was created in 1974 by artists, Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels, who were a part of the art group Ant Farm. The installation is made up of a row of 10 Cadillac automobiles half-buried in the ground. The cars were first displayed with their original paint colors, but now the artwork’s owner allows visitors to add to the installation by creating graffiti and spray painting on the cars. This has transformed the cars into a brightly colored spectacle and a feast for the eyes.

Though the cache does have a paper logbook, cache owner Scubafrogger explains in the cache description that the car containing the logbook acts as a logbook as well. Geocachers can “sign the logbook” by spray painting their username onto the car and taking a picture. If there are any empty spray cans left over after logging, they (and any other trash found nearby) can be deposited in a dumpster near the entrance to the art installation.

The location of the cache probably requires a car to access it as it is in a cow pasture off of Interstate 40 and Route 66, but the amazing sights and experience this one-of-a-kind geocache provides makes it worth the detour.
