The world is a big place full of immense adventure, magical destinations, and captivating history. Add in a global treasure hunt and the possibilities are endless. One place that captures this vastness of our world is the Isle of Skye. While it may be famous for its appearance in movies, novels, and a prominent mention in any guidebook to Scotland, geocachers visiting the island find even more reasons to be enthralled by Skye at our Geocache of the Week, Between the sky and Skye (GC6M8MA).

The Isle of Skye is a treasure-trove of mystical landscapes, pronounced coastlines, and intriguing castles. Some hidden treasures, however, are only known to geocachers. In order to earn the smiley for GC6M8MA, cachers need to hike up a steep path along the dramatic cliffs. On the way, you’ll encounter sheep grazing in the vibrant green grass on either side of the path. The sheep may observe you with curiosity, but don’t let their curious gaze distract you from finding the treasure, which lies further up the path.

Upon arriving at the coordinates, cachers are rewarded with a stunning view of Skye’s famous coastline. Sheer rock cliffs topped by green grass starkly contrast with the deep blue ocean water. Even on cloudy, hazy, or windy days you can’t help but be enchanted. According to cacher Team_Knoppies, “Wonderful walk up today, with indeed spectacular views on the cliffs which were a bit hazy, felt like standing in a painting.”

The cache is cleverly tucked away. Depending on your luck and geo-senses, you may find the cache quickly or after a bit of poking around. Once the log is in hand and signed, you can safely move your gaze to another treasure of Skye, the Neist Point Lighthouse. For over 100 years, it has protected ships from the treacherous coastline and continues to amaze curious cachers who can hike down for more exploration.

While anyone would be delighted by the Isle of Skye, the experience of logging GC6M8MA adds another layer of adventure, exploration, and exhilaration to this magical destination. Cachers who have found the cache all write with absolute wonder about this chapter in their treasure hunt, still reminiscing about the excitement of another smiley while being surrounded by phenomenal views at the coordinates. As cacher MrDan86 logged, “What a stunning place. I am forever in love. Caching in a place like this is pure joy.”
