Today, we release a new country/regional souvenir for Albania. If you have found a geocache in Albania, you automatically receive the souvenir on your profile.

Albania lies along the Adriatic Sea on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe. Throughout a complex history that has included the Roman Empire and Ottoman Empire, Albania’s unique culture has persisted and evolved.

The country’s vibrant culture is echoed in its beautiful landscapes. Though Albania occupies a little less than 17,400 miles (28,000 km), the small country’s borders contain stunning coastlines, bird sanctuaries with waterfowl and flamingos, snowy mountains, serene lakes, and a bustling urban cityscape in its capital city, Tirana.

This week’s Geocache of the Week, Butrint (GC32Q2J), showcases Albania’s ancient history. The Traditional Cache is located in the ruins of the ancient city of Butrint.

Butrint sits on a small peninsula in southern Albania between Lake Butrint and the Vivari Channel. The ruins of the city tell the story of its evolution from its early days as part of Ancient Greece, to its time as a Roman colony, its period of rule under the Ottoman Empire, and its ultimate abandonment. Making the find shouldn’t take too long, but you can spend much longer exploring the area surrounding it. The large area includes significant remnants of a theater, public baths, a basilica, and early Christian churches.

To find the geocache among the ruins will require some concentration on the part of the cacher, but the hint on the cache page should help out anyone who feels stumped. Cachers should also make sure to bring a pen with them as the micro cache container does not contain a writing instrument.

This geocache is a great find for any cacher who is looking for a taste of adventure and history. Exploring the ancient ruins, taking in the sights of Lake Butrint, and locating the hidden geocache gives the outing a certain Indiana Jones flair, making this a caching experience you’re sure to remember.
