Three reasons to add friends on Geocaching.com

Geocaching friends are handy for lots of reasons—they offer a second pair of eyes looking for the cache, they can distract any muggles nearby, or maybe they brought that special tool of the trade. The list goes on! It’s easy to see the benefits of geocaching friends when you’re out in the field, but there are also benefits to adding friends on Geocaching.com.

Before we go further, you might be wondering how to grow your friend list. To add a friend on Geocaching.com, visit your Dashboard and select View friends. Enter your friend’s username below Add a Friend and select Send Invitation. Once your friend has accepted your friend request, they will be added to your friend list!

Here are three reasons why adding to your friend list can benefit your geocaching

  1. See what your geocaching friends are up to right from your Dashboard.
Once you’ve added friends on Geocaching.com you can choose to show their geocaching activity in the newsfeed on your Dashboard. From there, you can view their recent finds, logs, and photos.

  2. Stay motivated with your Leaderboard on web and mobile.
Your Leaderboard shows you and your friends’ geocaching activity. If you log a cache or attend an Event, you collect points that are displayed at the top of the page. Easily access your Leaderboard on the website from your Dashboard, or access it in the Geocaching® mobile app by going to your profile and tapping on the Leaderboard icon. Currently, the icon for the Leaderboard is the same icon for our Reach the Peak souvenir challenge. See if you can beat your friends to the summit!

  3. See which friends have found a cache on the website and in the app.
To see your friends’ logs on the website, click View all logs just below the “Log geocache” button near the top of the cache page. On the next page click on “Your Friends’ Logs”. To see your friends’ logs for any geocache in the app, select a geocache from the map, on the geocache page select Activity, then on the next page select Friends. Use the Logbook or the app to get an idea of who you can call if you need to phone-a-friend on a tricky cache!

Bonus: Tag your friends in your logs
When logging a cache on the website, use the @ symbol and a list of your Geocaching.com friends will appear. Choose the friend you wish to tag. Submit your log. The tagged friend(s) will receive an email notification that they’ve been tagged in a Geocaching.com log.
