The closer you look for a cache, the more details you’ll see. At first glance, you may see a rock, but the longer you look at it, the more you realize it’s not just a boulder; it’s a… house!? Join us as we journey back to “LAMEIRINHA,” a cache we showcased almost ten years ago and are revisiting as this week’s Geocache of the Week (GC16670).

Located in the northern hills of Portugal, you’ll find Casa do Penedo (“Boulder House”). Built in 1974, Boulder House is an architectural monument made from four large boulders that serve as the foundation, walls, and ceiling of the house. So step back in time to the era of Fred and Wilma Flintstone, and let’s get ready to explore!

For many geocachers, the best part about visiting a new area is finding cool new geocaches that give you the chance to explore, and this cache is no exception. Windmills dot the hills surrounding Casa do Penedo and offer a beautiful landscape to enjoy while you visit this unique home.

After roaming the rolling hills and admiring the ‘rocky’ architecture, it’s time to narrow in on your search for the cache. Could the cache be tucked behind a bush? Is it down below the house near big tufts of grass? What about between two large rocks? Maybe the hunt should start there? It’s almost too fitting!

Rock on! Our intuition was on point for this cache. The cache is in a narrow crack between two large rocks near the boulder house—the perfect location to hide a cache at a tourist attraction like this!

Since we originally published GC16670 as Geocache of the Week in May 2013, it has grown in popularity with nearly 300 finds and has accumulated 220 amazing photographs of the unique house and the spectacular view.

Before the journey ends, take a seat at the handcrafted picnic table and appreciate the view and incredible craftsmanship of the boulder house. It’s not every day you can walk into the Flintstones’ neighborhood and feel right at home. With this cache found and adventure complete, it’s time to move on to the next cache! Yabba-dabba-doo!
