Four reasons to add friends in the official Geocaching® app and website

With geocachers attending Events to earn points for Wheel of Challenges this month, the spirit of geocaching community and friendship is in the air. Geocaching friends are handy for lots of reasons and it’s easy to see the benefits of geocaching friends when you’re out in the field, but there are also benefits to adding friends on the website and app.

Before we go further, you might be wondering how to grow your friend list. There are two ways to add friends, depending on whether you’re using the app or website.

To add a friend on Geocaching.com

Visit your Dashboard and select View friends. Enter your friend’s username below Add a Friend and select Send Invitation. Once your friend has accepted your friend request, they will be added to your friend list!

To add a friend in the official Geocaching® app

To add a friend using the QR code:
Open your profile in the app and tap on your profile icon. On your expanded profile, tap “My code” to make a QR code appear. Have your new geocaching friend scan the QR code to send you a friend request. Accept the friend request and celebrate your new friendship!

Here are three reasons why adding to your friend list can benefit you:

See what your geocaching friends are up to right from your Dashboard
Once you’ve added friends on Geocaching.com, you can choose to show their geocaching activity in the newsfeed on your Dashboard. From there, you can view their recent finds, logs, and photos.

Stay motivated with your Leaderboard
Your Leaderboard shows you and your friends’ geocaching activity. If you log a cache or attend an Event, you collect points that are displayed at the top of the page. Easily access your Leaderboard on the website from your Dashboard.

See which friends have found a cache on the website and in the app
To see your friends’ logs on the website, click View all logs just below the “Log geocache” button near the top of the cache page. On the next page click on “Your Friends’ Logs”. To see your friends’ logs for any geocache in the app, select a geocache from the map, on the geocache page select Activity, then on the next page select Friends. Use the Logbook or the app to get an idea of who you can call if you need to phone-a-friend on a tricky cache!

“Phoning a friend” becomes a lot easier
With the friends features in the app, “phoning a friend” for help now only requires a quick visit to the friends list. After seeing which of your friends has found the cache you’re looking for, open the list of your friends in the app by clicking on the friends icon in your mobile profile. From the friends list, you can easily visit the profile of a friend to send them a message asking for a hint or two.

Bonus: Tag your friends in your logs
When logging a cache on the website, use the @ symbol and a list of your Geocaching.com friends will appear. Choose the friend you wish to tag. Submit your log. If they are opted in, the tagged friend(s) will receive an email notification that they’ve been tagged in a Geocaching.com log.
