Cache Hiding Themes—November: Extreme Caches

Calling all thrill-seekers and daredevils! This month’s hiding theme is for you!

November is all about EXTREME geocaches. From rock-climbing to scuba diving, urban exploration to remote destinations, these high-terrain and high-adrenaline caches are sure to leave your heart pounding.

1. GC329QE—Huterlaner

This lofty cache is hidden at the top of an Austrian ‘Klettersteig.’ Also known as ‘via ferrata,’ they are mountainside climbing routes made from iron hand and foot holds. Hidden in 2011, this cache is far from rusty! Geocachers come from near and far to test their ‘metal.’

2. GC4V3FE—Snake Island

“Snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes?”—Indiana Jones

Of all the creepy, crawly, slithery, or slimy creatures we don’t want to encounter while geocaching, snakes are high on our list. This ‘sssecretive’ cache is hidden on a small island in Macedonia and well-guarded by not one but two species of snakes.

Only one species is venomous, but does it really matter?

3. GC5QZQE—Odyssey Ship Wreck Memory of USMC Sgt. Mike Frayn

Next on the list of legless animals we don’t want to encounter while geocaching: eels! This Honduran geocache is well-guarded by all sorts of sea creatures, including moray eel. So, if you’re f‘eel’ing adventurous, grab your scuba gear and make a splash with this aquatic cache.

4. GC8D4AR—⛹ Bällebad ⛹

There are geocaches that require climbing and there are geocaches that are hidden in life-sized ball pits. But, to our knowledge, there is only one geocache that is both.

This deviously delightful cache near Sinspelt, Germany is sure to confuse, amuse, and challenge any geocacher. 🧗

5. GC4CQ9V—The Architect
This geocache is a mental workout as much as it is a physical workout! Decipher the letter to find the treasure hidden beneath the city of St. Louis. With multiple stages, prepared to spend a whole day (or more) solving this puzzle! Don’t forget a flashlight!

6. GC444FH—Brutal Betong Extreme
This Swedish Mystery Cache also requires geocachers to break a mental sweat in order to solve the final coordinates. Decipher the code to find the abandoned tower. Once inside, the real challenge begins: a 10-story climb to the top!

7. GCGGGV—They Would Have Loved It
Featured as Geocache of the Week in 2023, this long-lost cache has a story to tell! This cache waited more than 20 years to be found and set the record for the oldest unfound geocache. Then, along came three geocachers who set out with a car, a canoe, and a lot of determination. After 3 days of bushwacking through the Canadian wilderness, these brave geocachers finally found this elusive cache and signed the somewhat charred logbook.
