KempenseGeoBuddies spark creativity and delight at KGB3 Mega-Event
The KGB 3 experience was far more than just a Mega-Event—it was a multi-day geocaching adventure, featuring eight events over five days. I had the opportunity to attend six of these events, including the Mega-Event (GCAFKGB) and was so impressed. It’s hard to believe that a team of just 10 people (the KempenseGeoBuddies, KGB for short) could coordinate such a variety of activities so smoothly, let alone manage all eight with such attention to detail. I could go on at length about all of these events, I’ll focus on one to give you a sense of what made their third Mega-Event, KGB 3, so special.
The KGB 3 night event (GCAPVDJ) took place the evening before the Mega in a local park. As we walked toward the event on a crisp, clear night, the energy from the crowd was palpable, filled with excitement and anticipation. The air was also filled with the smell of cooking fries—this is Belgium, after all. Despite the large crowd, the atmosphere was welcoming, with people greeting each other like old friends, sharing hugs, laughter, and lively conversations.
We arrived just in time to join a small group on an adventure behind the charming little church in the park. The jovial mood tamed quickly as we took in the eerie candle lit path before us. As the noise of the crowd dimmed, we began to hear faint, haunting accordion music in the distance and we were all in. We were led on a beautiful and haunting trip, seeking answers from witches, within caves, and in the flames of a fire artist. At the end, we capped off our successful mission by signing a very unique log book. Afterward, we headed inside the church, where beer was flowing and the chairs had been cleared to make room for a dance floor, with a band performing geocaching-themed songs.
After a full day of adventure, I left early to get a good night’s sleep in preparation for the big event the next morning. Unsurprisingly, the Mega was a huge success. This year’s theme was “fire,” and everything—from the logbook to the vintage fire truck and Adventure Lab locations —stayed true to the theme. The event featured on-site activities for geocachers of all ages, including a rockwall and zipline!
I had an incredible first visit to Belgium. Everyone was so kind and welcoming. I want to give a special thank you to the KGB team and local reviewers, HartenDame and FlameCarrier for going above and beyond!
Kudos to the KGB team for putting on such an incredible Mega. Their hard work and creativity made this an event to remember!
