Cache Hiding Themes—December: Holiday Caches

The holidays are a time of joy and cheer. No matter the time of year, holidays can connect us to our culture and traditions.

With December’s hiding theme, geocaching becomes a part of those traditions. This month, we received so many outstanding cache nominations that we can’t help but celebrate! Take a look at some of our favorites in this festive feature:

On this North American holiday, the fate of the seasons depends on a small rodent by the name of Punxsutawney Phil. If he spots his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter; if not, there will be an early spring. The more important question is: will he spot the cache?

It’s tradition on St. Patrick’s Day to wear green, or you’ll get pinched! See if you’ll get lucky and find this delightfully Irish leprechaun-themed cache. Will you find a cache at the end of the rainbow?

      • GCAKB99—🥚🥚🥚🐣 EASTER EGG 🐣🥚🥚🥚
    Images by KLUPPEL and ON6DSL.

A favorite tradition during Easter is painting and hiding Easter eggs. Though we can’t say the Easter bunny helped hide these, there are plenty of colorful eggs to see in the cache gallery!

The solstice is celebrated in many different ways around the globe. This educational Virtual Cache, fittingly located on a university campus, takes us back to the origins of the day. The sun will be front and center at noon on the summer solstice. Can you make the stars align to log this one?

      • GC7EFHE—Scary Micro in the Woods (CM#12)

Nothing’s scarier than a micro in the woods. Except maybe this micro in a haunted forest! Experience the nightmare of this haunting Halloween cache—if you dare!

      • GCAZER0—Colorado 🔴🟠🟡🟢🔵🟣

Let there be light(s)! This festive Christmas-adjacent cache finds another purpose for string lights besides going around a tree. Can you line everything up to crack the combination?

      • GCAYY26—Kioicho Plaza of Water 🎄 紀尾井町 水の広場

In Tokyo, Christmas is celebrated with an event known as “Kioi Winter,” when the town is illuminated with thousands of lights. This cache takes you front and center to experience the beauty of the lights firsthand.

There’s no shortage of “silly” holiday traditions here! In Sweden, it’s not the holiday season until you eat Sill, a traditional Christmas fish dish. So get silly with this cache—’tis the season, after all!

  1. We loved celebrating with these heartfelt holiday caches!

Thank you to all the cache owners who put in the effort to construct creative caches for the geocaching community. There are countless caches out there that deserve to be featured, and while we may not be able to feature them all, we’d like to give a shout-out to every single hardworking cache owner out there.

Another big thank you for hiding and nominating caches for this year’s Cache Hiding Themes! While 2024’s hiding themes may be over, plenty more caches will be featured in 2025. We’ll see you then!
