A recap of our fourth 2025 hiding theme: Blast from the past! ⏳

In 2025, we celebrated a major milestone—25 years of geocaching! To mark this special anniversary, we introduced a new hiding theme per quarter to celebrate geocaches published in 2025. Every three months, we featured geocaches from that quarter’s theme on the Geocaching Blog and social media.

For our fourth and final hiding theme of the year, each nomination helped us revisit memorable moments in geocaching. We struck retro gold with your ‘blast’tastic nominations and discovered caches that could make a highlight reel titled “geocaching’s greatest hits.”

Take a look at some caches that are time-capsule worthy:

  1. GCBC4JW—25 Jahre Geocaching

Kicking things off strong with a mailbox celebrating 25 years of geocaching. Inside, you’ll find a quiz with 10 questions about the history of geocaching. If all questions are answered correctly, a door opens, revealing the logbook.

2. GCBDW2R—Blast from the Past of Gaming / ゲームの楽しい思い出

This creative multi-cache consists of four stages. At each stage, you will find an old game console that is reminiscent of childhood in the 90s. The posted coordinates for the next stage are on each console, and the last controller has the log sheet on its back.

3. GCAXATT—Jump (LFLs of Woodmoor)

Part of a series focused on ’80s and ’90s hits, this gadget cache is based on the Van Halen mega-hit “Jump”, and cachers must encourage David Lee Roth to do his famous split leap to access the log sheet. As if all this Van Halen action wasn’t enough, the cache lives in the front yard of a Van Halen enthusiast, who encouraged the cache owner to think big.

4. GCBFTT4—Projection

This cache container consists of an old slide projector. There are two cartridges, each holding 36 slides, that automatically feed the projector. The logbook is made of handmade slides that can be signed with Sharpies. This cache definitely brought us back to simpler times, even if just for a moment.

5. GC8XYTX—Hned zítra ráno zavolám

Did someone say cable salad? Dedicated to the 1975 Czech hit “I’ll Call You In The Morning” by Karel Gott, the cache container consists of a landline telephone. It might even confuse the younger generation of geocachers.

6. GC5BW5P—Kindheitserinnerungen III

Celebrating its 11th birthday in August 2025, this cache features memorabilia that German kids growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s will be very familiar with. Created with care and passion, you’ll find Bravo magazines, board games and toys, books, and many more classics from these decades.

7. GC8C348—A Photo Legacy

We’re bringing you major throwback vibes with this analog 35mm camera cache. The camera acts as the cache container, and inside you’ll find the log sheet wound on the film take-up spool.

8. GC8YH8F—Da liegt Musike drin…

This cache is a smash hit! A puzzle requires geocachers to guess a Ricky King (German guitarist) song, which quickly transforms a charming geocaching bench into an instrumental concert! The final location reveals an authentic replica of an electric guitar—a true classic.

9. GCBEK9G—Dexter the Dino

Once upon a time, a dino named Dexter accidentally ate a log sheet—it is your mission to extract it. Find Dexter at your own discretion, though; you’ll have to tough out some thorns and rough terrain, graded a 4.

10. GCBEVTN—emotion

Do you ever get emotional looking at old polaroids or pictures from the days of disposable cameras? This cache owner is tapping into nostalgic vibes with this instant-print polaroid-style camera. Snap your picture, wait for it to print, and use it as your log sheet.

11. GCBB0DR—Balade au Thouars – LetterBox

We’ve spotted another 25 in the wild! This cache is located in Toulon in the Var region of France, and celebrates 25 years of geocaching and letterboxing, both of which originated in North America.

12. GCBFNVR—Toshima City Minami-Otsuka Park 🚊 豊島区立南大塚公園

The posted coordinates of this cache take you back in time to a Japanese streetcar that operated from 1949 to 1971. Visitors can experience firsthand the atmosphere of the Shōwa era.

13. GCBDKQJ—! Not for the faint of heart !

A major throwback, this cache owner created a cache out of a video cassette container from their non-broadcast job in the 1980s and ‘90s. The log sheet is inside a second container, where SWAG can also be found.

14. GC8Z5MY—Donkey Kong – Gadget Cache

The year is 1981, and Donkey Kong has just been released. To access the log sheet, you must use sticks to move a Mario puck to the top of the box and release it from the game board.

15. GCBF059—Thèmes de pose 2025 : Retour dans le passé 👶 🛴

This back-to-childhood-inspired Letterbox Hybrid cache contains small children’s toys, a logbook, a stamp, and an ink pad. As the cache page states, “something of childhood always remains, always…” and the same is definitely true for us.


What a nostalgia-packed adventure down memory lane! Old-school inspiration and creative design made these caches a true blast from the past.
