We asked you: what makes a quality geocache?
When you find a cache, what makes it stand out as a quality cache? For some, it’s about creativity. For others, it’s about location, storytelling, or thoughtful placement.
While it’s easy to point out what doesn’t work—like damaged containers or soggy logs—defining what makes a cache great is much more subjective.
We asked geocachers to share what quality means to them.
Note: some of the responses have been edited for clarity and brevity.
“A good geocache is one that people talk about later. Not just because they found it, but because it gave them something worth sharing: a laugh, a challenge, a view, or a story.” – Grady B.
“Proper maintenance of the cache!” – Stephanie T.
“The description is important if you’re describing a place or its history. My descriptions are quite long because most of my caches are historical, but even a few sentences, one or two photos, and a background image can make the cache page much better. The description is your showcase—it should encourage people to choose your cache.” – Robert O.
“Caches that involve a puzzle or code cracking to open, pole-fishing caches, and containers that are themed to the area where they are hidden.” – Jessie-Jo K.
“A high quality container. A good location.” – Shawn G.
“A good puzzle with a challenging hike and a good bushwhack leading you to an ammocan well off the trail. A true mental and physical challenge.” – Jim M.
“A geocache that puts a smile on your face!” – Be L.
“My preferred cache is a well-constructed gadget cache. I’m no good with puzzle caches in the app, but give me a puzzle to put in my hands, and I feel like a kid again.” – Tom L.
“At the end of the day, it’s not about size or difficulty. It’s about care and thought. The best geocaches feel like someone actually wanted you to enjoy the hunt.” – Joe H.
