What happens when a gigantic geocaching milestone meets a gigantic cache container?

This week’s Geocache of the Week, Area Feste (GCBE31H), welcomes geocachers with something larger than life: an entire shipping container transformed into a geocache.

Located in Castronno, Italy, the cache was created as part of the excitement surrounding Geocaching Made in Italy (GCBCRTC), the country’s first Mega-Event, held at the Area Feste event grounds. The event brought together geocachers from across Europe for a historic gathering of the Italian geocaching community. Of course, Italy’s first Mega-Event deserved a geocache that could match the occasion.

Approaching the coordinates, geocachers quickly realize that the search isn’t about spotting a cleverly disguised container hidden on the festival grounds; the container is the landscape. Standing in the open and covered in colorful graffiti artwork featuring Signal the Frog® and bright event-themed designs, the cache immediately becomes part treasure hunt, part photo opportunity.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. As we all know, every cache needs a log sheet. What better way to let geocachers make their own mark and contribute to Italian geocaching history than signing the container? Organizers came fully prepared, offering pens to sign the door and more than enough space.

Interestingly, this cache was a spontaneous surprise for the organizing team, GC_Club_Italiano, arranged in secret by one of the members of the group. During a time of uncertainty, after facing shipping challenges with receiving the beloved Signal costume in time, one of the organizers spotted an old rusty shipping container at the venue and envisioned transforming it into a giant geocache to surprise the team.

To bring the idea to life, they invited local geocacher and graffiti artist, Elborse, who created the colorful mural featuring Signal and geocaching-themed artwork. Despite challenging conditions and extreme heat, the container was transformed in time and admired by many of the geocachers at the event.
