The NC Hidden Gems GeoTour (GT506) invites geocachers to leave the main road behind and discover the weird, wild, and wonderful sides of the Tar Heel State. Launching September 19, 2026, this GeoTour features 15 geocaches hidden near scenic trails, charming small towns, natural wonders, and delightfully unexpected attractions.
Each stop reveals a different side of North Carolina. Follow your curiosity across the state to uncover fascinating stories, local legends, quirky works of art, and places you may have to see to believe. Here are a few highlights waiting along the way:

GCBJXH9 — Watch art come alive at Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park in Wilson. The park features 30 enormous kinetic sculptures created from recycled metal by North Carolina folk artist Vollis Simpson. As the wind blows, the colorful creations spin, move, and chime.

GCBJT8W — Step into a miniature world at Shangri-La Stone Village. Retired farmer Henry Warren began building the village at age 72 and eventually created 27 small stone structures, including a church, school, theater, and mill.

GCBM92C — Take a peaceful walk along Bird Island to discover the Kindred Spirit Mailbox. For decades, visitors have filled its notebooks with letters, reflections, memories, and words of encouragement.

GCBJV39 — Experience one of nature’s most exciting playgrounds at Sliding Rock. Located in Pisgah National Forest, this 60-foot natural waterslide carries adventurous visitors into a pool of cool mountain water.
Other stops introduce geocachers to North Carolina icons, from the birthplace of a famous soft drink and the real-life inspiration for Mayberry to unusual sculpture gardens and memorable outdoor adventures.
