Here are five we always recommend.

1. The Geocaching® app
You will need the app or a GPS device to view the details of the geocache and navigate to its location.

If you’re geocaching somewhere more remote where cell service is spotty, consider becoming a Premium member to download offline maps ahead of time and stay on trail and on track. It’s always a good idea to have a printed or digital map of the area you’re exploring.

2. Writing utensil
Geocaches contain a log sheet where you can write your name and the date you found the cache. Not all geocaches contain or can fit a writing utensil inside the container, so be sure to pack a pen or pencil to sign the logbook.

3. Water and snacks
Some geocaches only take a moment to find, while others take all day! If you’re heading out on a longer adventure, it’s important to bring water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized.

4. Comfortable shoes and clothing
Wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather and terrain you’ll be exploring. The geocache description and terrain level will give you an idea of what you may encounter on the search.

Consider sunscreen and/or natural insect repellent, too!

5. Items to trade
Often called SWAG or ‘stuff we all get,’ larger geocaches often include trading items, so bring small trinkets or toys to trade with items in the geocache. Check out these four SWAG ideas for your next outing.

Remember, every geocaching outing provides an opportunity to improve our world. Always follow Leave No Trace principles, which include packing out all trash, and ensuring that your impact is as small and as positive as possible. Now, go have some fun and find a geocache!

Whether you’re geocaching in your neighborhood or a remote mountain range, it’s important to bring a few items for a successful and enjoyable outing.
