It can be a frustrating experience.

Yet, inside a DNF log lies powerful information — for you, for the cache owner, and for the community. Could it be the unsung hero of geocaching?

Imagine yourself near the posted coordinates of a geocache you’ve had on your mind for weeks. At a recent event, a fellow cacher told you about the glory of inking the logbook on this cache. Their description convinced you this would be a great way to spend a beautiful Saturday afternoon. You eagerly head out to the posted coordinates, armed with your trusty pen, the Geocaching® mobile app, and plenty of confidence.

As you get closer, a trail guides you to a likely location to begin the hunt. Yet, as the seconds turn into minutes, your initial excitement gives way to concern. Numerous thoughts race in your mind: “Am I in the right place?” and “Did my friend actually find this cache?” are questions that linger. The recent activity on the cache page is all “Found it” logs, so nothing should be amiss. But with 30 minutes already sunk into this hunt, you start to worry.

At the one-hour mark, you exhale and call it quits. Despite looking in every conceivable place, no cache appeared. Frustrated, you log a “Didn’t find it” (DNF) right there in the field, sharing your “defeat” with the cache owner and other players. Visions of the posted coordinates play in your mind. Ugh! Where could that darn cache be?

And…scene.

This story, although very common in the geocaching community, is rarely celebrated. After all, what’s there to “celebrate” exactly? To adapt Julius Caesar, you came, you saw, but you didn’t conquer. For most of my time as a geocacher, I saw my DNF logs as frustrating and, sometimes, even embarrassing.

Yet, I’ve recently had a change of heart. In my opinion, DNF logs are actually the unsung heroes of the geocaching gameboard. Four reasons power my belief:

DNFs are helpful to all

Although no geocacher would volunteer to DNF a cache, almost all geocachers would agree they can be helpful to other players. A personal DNF that comes to mind is from “The Great State of Texas” (GCB1NP5), a Multi-Cache at the University of Texas at Austin. Despite solving the final coordinates, my group and I could not locate the cache. I logged a DNF, and shortly learned that the cache was indeed missing! The cache owner promptly replaced the cache.

While frustrating at the time, my DNF log resulted in owner maintenance that may not have happened otherwise. Each DNF log provides valuable data, both to other players and cache owners, about the state of a cache. This data is especially useful if your log comes after many months of inactivity on an individual cache.

DNFs are a game within the game

After logging a DNF, I am always curious about whether that geocache was present or missing. A recent DNF I logged was on “Duck Duck Goose” (GCBNWAN), a cache in the Seattle area. When I approached this cache, I did not expect it to be extremely challenging. Sure enough, despite a lot of time there, my partner and I couldn’t make the find and we assumed the cache had gone missing.

Instead, the cache was found just days later. It must have been very well hidden! My internal question of “Was it there or was it not?” had been settled. The unknown had been answered. This is an entertaining “game inside a game.” Each geocache is, in a sense, its own little game.

DNFs build camaraderie

Shortly after moving to Seattle, I tried my hand at a challenging geocache near Geocaching HQ, “Metallic Menagerie” (GC6T121). After struggling to find it on my own, I logged a DNF and shared the story with my co-workers. Just two weeks after my initial attempt, and with a larger group, I found the cache! The success that day was adding to my find count, but the DNF fueled me to ask for help and build friendships with those around me, a much bigger prize in my opinion.

DNFs motivate additional geocaching

At its core, a DNF log signifies that the adventure may not be over with a specific geocache. Although I believe there is no shame in leaving a DNF log and never returning, sometimes it can inspire future outings.

I recently traveled to the United Kingdom on vacation and visited Liverpool. My partner and I attempted to find “Penny Lane” (GC4GP61), but struggled to find the cache. Such a famous street, but no smiley to show for it. With many “Found it” logs since our attempt. I know that should I ever visit again, another try at this cache will certainly be on my list.

What do you think about DNFs?
