{"id":36535,"date":"2016-09-19T15:24:28","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T22:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/blog\/?p=36535"},"modified":"2016-10-10T14:00:01","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T21:00:01","slug":"get-to-know-your-earthcache-reviewers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/blog\/2016\/09\/get-to-know-your-earthcache-reviewers\/","title":{"rendered":"Get to know your EarthCache reviewers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/blog\/2016\/09\/international-earthcache-day-is-october-9\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International EarthCache Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on October 9, and Geocaching HQ is excited to partner up again with the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/earthcache.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geological Society of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to offer a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/about\/souvenirs.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">souvenir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for finding an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/about\/cache_types.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EarthCache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on that date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthcache.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EarthCaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provide an opportunity to learn a geological lesson and visit awe-inspiring geological locations. Visitors can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage its resources and how scientists gather evidence. Typically, to log an EarthCache, you will have to provide answers to questions by observing the geological location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, there is a group of dedicated EarthCache Reviewers who help facilitate this program so that geocachers can enjoy EarthCaches all over the world. Instead of reading a lesson in a book, they see and learn about geological features with their own eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Who are EarthCache Reviewers?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are community volunteers with scientific backgrounds that work with EarthCache cache owners to develop the best submissions possible. Learn about their story and what they love so much about EarthCaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>GeoawareCA, Sandra<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandra has been an EarthCache Reviewer since 2009, making her the longest standing active EarthCache Reviewer. In fact, most diamonds that have been dated are much older than plant life on earth (the source of coal).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any cool stories to share?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recently travelled to Iceland and found many incredible EarthCaches there. We climbed to the top of the Eldfell volcano which last erupted in 1973 and warmed our hands by the heat rising out of the fumaroles (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC2EVVH_eldfell?guid=70a9d7d8-428a-447f-9422-a87ce0b106bf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GC2EVVH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); we visited a couple of locations where you could walk between the continental plates for Europe and North America (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC1Z45X_thingvellir-the-mid-atlantic-ridge?guid=cf6d5051-f5ad-4ce3-b137-8340d7c1cc4d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GC1Z45X<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC2DK2E_midlina?guid=60e0565e-6cfd-4b69-a855-97d948b0eea2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GC2DK2E<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); we visited geysir from which the English word geyser is derived (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC1G4XZ_geysir-powerful-hot-spring?guid=9411fed9-7546-41e7-9206-6aa3d3efa046\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GC1G4XZ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); we saw caves carved into columnar basalt and walked along a black sand beach (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC514W0_stuolaberg-hellar-basalt-caves?guid=3029897f-d757-442f-ba96-631e2f2eb9cf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GC514W0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); we swam in geothermally heated pools (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC25643_blaa-lonio-blue-lagoon-blaue-lagune?guid=bf865ffc-ac7b-4923-ba5d-afc16e4abeb3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GC25643<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); and we saw many beautiful waterfalls including one we could walk behind (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC2B1TJ_seljalandsfoss?guid=5bb4c46e-7e62-4641-a17f-9cf2f21d7102\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GC2B1TJ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This means when standing on the equator at sea level you are 21km higher than when standing on either pole. As a result of this, the summit of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chimborazo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chimborazo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a mountain in Ecuador, is the place where you are closest to space, still standing on Earth! However, some highlights include \u201cUmpire Rock,\u201d<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC1G4W0_umpire-rock?guid=35295b2f-5bbe-4698-83b1-252ac2d1a15b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GC1G4W0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where an urban EarthCache teaches a glaciology lesson in New York City\u2019s Central Park, \u201cCabo da Roca &#8211; DP\/EC33,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/geocache\/GC1HGAY_cabo-da-roca-dp-ec33?guid=a8eb7765-1cc8-47e7-a0c0-41acd9281b35\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GC1HGAY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many other EarthCaches along Portugal\u2019s west coast developed by danieloliveira, which brought the local landscape alive for me during a tour with the EarthCache developer himself, and \u201cApe Cave,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/seek\/cache_details.aspx?guid=58b10964-488d-4d2b-a407-26acbf5d649a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GCZ8ZQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which took me about a mile through a lava tube on the flank of Mount St. Helens.
