The main goal of the update is to make the Geocache Hiding Guidelines easier to read and understand. Here is what we have done to achieve that goal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved guideline layout<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Made text more clear<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced number of words by 15%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moved supporting material to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/help\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help Center<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added some changes or clarifications to specific guidelines (see below)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the text updates, the page got a face lift, including better navigation! <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read the new guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Community volunteer translators are currently translating the new guideline text into 24 languages. As these translations become available, the guidelines will be updated in those languages.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Changes and clarifications<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some guidance has changed since the last update a few years ago. Those changes include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caches must be accessible<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to hide your cache for the long term, where it is available most of the week, and so it can be found without contacting anyone. Check out the new section <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#accessible\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the guideline text about accessibility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caches cannot be buried &#8211; except with permission<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid problems with land managers and property owners, geocaches were previously not allowed to be buried under any circumstances. In general, this is still the case, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#buried\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unless you get explicit permission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the property owner. See the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.groundspeak.com\/display\/GEO\/Home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regional Geocaching Policies Wiki<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for details in your region.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Definition of container and logbook<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of proper definitions and examples for container and logbook has led to confusion in the past. We have included more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#logbook\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specific guidance for logbooks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#commonsense\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">containers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the new guideline text. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/help\/index.php?pg=kb.page&amp;id=75\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">container<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must hold the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#logbook\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">logbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The logbook must be physical, replaceable, easy to sign, and enclosed within a container.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t hide caches far from home<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#beforesubmit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vacation\/holiday caches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are usually not published because they are difficult to maintain. It&#8217;s best to place physical caches in your area so you can respond quickly to maintenance needs. In rare circumstances, a vacation cache with an acceptable maintenance plan might be published.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicate with your reviewer<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have added <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#reviewernote\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new tips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on how to communicate with your reviewer. Prior to publication, cache hiders should always provide information about the geocache location, container, and how it is hidden. <\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No precedents<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although \u201cno precedents\u201d was part of the previous guidelines, the reviewers were unable to link to it. You can find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#noprecedents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the new link here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No agendas<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have updated text to clarify that what we mean by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#solicitation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agendas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including highlighting causes such as charitable ones.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No commercial content<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have added text to make it clear that Geocaching HQ may make exceptions to the commercial guidelines for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/geotours\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GeoTours<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/promotions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trackable promotions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family friendly<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have added text to clarify that cache pages must be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#familyfriendly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family friendly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cache owner responsibilities<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a cache owner and unsure about your responsibilities, head over to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#ownerresponsibility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this new section that details maintenance expectations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With more than 3 million geocaches worldwide, cache owners must be extra careful to keep their geocaches in good shape. This prevents \u201cgeo-litter\u201d and keeps the game fun for all involved. If a cache owner shows that they can\u2019t keep up with the maintenance of their existing caches, they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#cachemaintenance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might lose their hiding privileges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to keeping the cache page and cache container in good shape, cache owners are also responsible for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#afterpublication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keeping the cache page guideline compliant after publication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letterbox Hybrid Caches<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rules about the distance between the final coordinates and the posted coordinates are defined by the underlying cache type: Traditional, Mystery, or Multi-Cache. See <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#letterboxhybrid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letterbox Hybrid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wherigo Caches<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#wherigo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wherigo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posted coordinates must be the same as the \u201cStart at\u201d coordinates on Wherigo.com. Exceptions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Play anywhere&#8221; cartridges<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Reverse&#8221; cartridges<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartridges that start at a later waypoint<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartridges used for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/help\/index.php?pg=kb.page&amp;id=892\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">geo-art<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these exceptions, the posted coordinates must be within 2 miles of the final.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Event Caches<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Events cannot be held in or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#eventlocation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">near transportation centers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as airports, cruise ship ports, and train stations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CITO Event Caches<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have updated the text regarding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\/guidelines#cito\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CITO caches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to clarify that we encourage partnering with other organizations and that a separate sign-up is all that is needed such events.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, Geocaching HQ is releasing updated guidelines for hiding caches.
