I was welcomed by geocachers from all over the country and spent the sunny spring weekend exploring the beautiful countryside through some amazing geocaches. While I toured around with local reviewers Pete and Helen (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/p\/default.aspx?guid=53c97574-5ad7-4b07-b0e1-63476d65c9d5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bunjil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), we ran into a group of four ladies on a similar caching path. They were usually a step ahead of us while solving some fun yet tricky gadget caches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I quickly learned that I\u2019d have to communicate differently with this caching group since all the members of their team were deaf. Smiles, waves, my typical thumbs up, and writing on paper would be the proper methods of communication. As the day progressed smiles increased each time we saw each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After meeting this wonderful group of women, I learned from Pete and Helen that they\u2019re part of a large community of deaf geocachers. There are about 25 members in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deaf Australia Geocaching Facebook<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> group from all over the country. The group communicates mostly on Facebook and they often meet in person at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">geocaching events throughout\u00a0Australia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Through their group, they tell stories of their adventures and share their challenges with each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon my return, I reached out to one of the members I met and asked a few questions. Cheryl (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/p\/default.aspx?guid=9eac9007-7d9a-4dd1-89f0-db377835c426\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crank1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), created her account in early 2009 after she was introduced to the game by her friend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/p\/default.aspx?guid=9d9b44d3-16ed-4a82-9f4c-b18e020ff09e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lava12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and has since found nearly 9,000 geocaches. When asked how the game impacts her life, she says \u201cIt takes me to places I wouldn&#8217;t usually go. Also keeps me young and active.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54078\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54078\" style=\"width: 656px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54078 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_3603-656x493.jpg\" alt=\"Grabbing a tree cache\" width=\"656\" height=\"493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3mo08i005h0zn.cloudfront.net\/blog\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_3603-656x493.jpg 656w, https:\/\/d3mo08i005h0zn.cloudfront.net\/blog\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_3603-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-54078\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grabbing a tree cache<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apparently, a member of the group is one of the top five finders for the country. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/p\/default.aspx?guid=8282996a-f9cf-4b3c-819e-cddae3cbc0b3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everlasting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with over 26,000 finds, is a good friend of Cheryl\u2019s and often meets up with her in Melbourne for cache outings. Cheryl told me, \u201cShe (Everlasting) travels around Australia caching. When she visits Melbourne, she stays at my house and we go caching for hours. However, deafness can provide advantages for other types. Cheryl says, \u201cBeing deaf means my other senses are heightened. When I search for caches, sometimes my visual cues and clues are &#8216;sharper&#8217; than other cachers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am fortunate to have met Cheryl and learn about their group.
