Visibility is clear for as far as the eye can see over the pristine, white ground. In the distance, you see a small land form. Is that a mirage? It is part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Altiplano\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altiplano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (&#8220;high plain&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Bolivia in South America. Some 30,000 to 42,000 years ago, the area was part of a giant prehistoric lake, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Minchin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lake Minchin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which hosted a variety of islands before largely drying up after the Incahuasi wet phase. However, the islands remained. Incahuasi has a total area of ~25 hectares (61 acres) and hosts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3c4Z_FK2vsw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enormous cacti<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, colonies of rabbit-like animals called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xgV___t2HVo\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">viscachas<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a tourist center, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a Traditional Cache! Cache owner, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/p\/default.aspx?guid=41794245-93ea-45d8-8576-b8a0a5383f12&amp;wid=f0f4e873-b435-4551-a9af-93d4003ae052&amp;ds=2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thesaurus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has experience as a guide through the salar and brought that knowledge when he decided where to hide his next cache. Once you get to the island, there is a fairly steep climb to get to the top, complete with a rock scramble over sharp volcanic rock to get to the cache.
