Though Rangitoto Island is no longer inhabited, it was once home to a community of people who built their own small vacation homes, called baches, on the island. Explore the history and nature of this picturesque volcanic island just a ferry ride from the bustling hub of Auckland.

Image by The Moor We Hunt…

Each stop on the Rangitoto Beaches Adventure takes you to a different historic bach on the island. Baches are a type of holiday home unique to New Zealand, which became popular in the early to mid-twentieth century. These holiday homes were typically built near beaches, made of simple materials, and many were not connected to electricity or running water. Nowadays, few baches are left and the remaining ones often have a special historic status.

As you walk around the island and learn about the intriguing history of the former Rangitoto Bach community, you also have the chance to take in the natural beauty of the island. This includes the largest Pohutukawa forest in the world, a native tree with bright red flowers. The entire island is technically a volcano and a walking trail that is easily accessible from the island’s wharf takes you up to the volcano’s peak for an incredible 360° view.

The Adventure’s creator, _Pax_, mentions in the Adventure’s description that there are no shops on the island, so make sure to pack food and water for your day on Rangitoto.

Find your next Adventure.
