New England Lost Ski Area Caches

Before the completion of the Interstate Highway System, almost every community in New England with a hill of at least 200' of vertical laid claim to a ski slope. Many Mom 'n Pop ski areas were operated on a whim and a prayer, utilizing a rope tow powered with an automotive engine using car rims on utility poles for rope pulleys. Modern highways now route skiers to destination resorts with artificial snow making, trail grooming, high capacity lifts, slope side condos, and Après-ski opportunities. What was once a cottage industry, is now controlled by conglomerates that squeezed out most of the small to medium-large ski areas from the market.
