This EarthCache is accessed via the Tundra Communities Trail, which begins at the Rock Cut Parking Area on Trail Ridge Road. The trail traverses a Tundra Protection Area; please remain on the trail during the hike, as damage to the fragile tundra community can take hundreds of years to repair. The round-trip hike will be a little over a mile, with a gain in elevation of about 200 feet. You will start your hike at about 12,100 feet, so take it slow and don’t forget the sunscreen.

Alpine Tor

The Alpine Visitor Center, at 11,796’, is the highest visitor center in the National Park System. It is located on the northwest rim of the cirque which forms the headwaters of the Fall River. This cirque has seen many glaciers during several periods of glaciation during the past two million years.

This cache is a regular sized cache that is easy enough to find. The container is a small rubbermaid container with a red lid. There is a log and pen. There is enough room for a few small trading items. Your kids can walk to this one.

Parking for this EarthCache is at the Gore Range Overlook parking area off of Trail Ridge Road.

Your view to the west of this location is born of fire and ice. Fire for the volcanic origins of the northern portion of the Never Summer Mountain Range and Specimen Mountain, and ice for the glaciers that sculpted the landscape and the snow packs at the higher elevations, that to this day continue to work on eroding down the mountains.

Longs Peak, at 14,259 feet, is the most prominent landmark of the Front Range north of Denver, and the tallest mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park. The elevation was changed from 14,255’ to 14,259’ in 2002 after a more precise survey was conducted. It is the 15th tallest of the Colorado Fourteeners.

During the past 2 million years, the glaciers in Rocky Mountain National Park have advanced and retreated several times from the high country. The ridges before you on each side of Moraine Park are the lateral moraines formed from the glacial debris which has been pushed and deposited to the sides of glaciers during the past 150,000 years. These moraines form the north and south boundaries for Moraine Park, which was the melting basin for the Thompson Glacier.
