Puddletown Forest lies in the heart of Hardy country, SW of the village he called Weatherbury. Recommended parking for Maisie's three madcaches is on Rhododendron Mile, close to where it crosses the old Roman Road from Badbury Rings to Dorchester.
The caches are linked by enjoyable path walks, energetic but peaceful. The optimum circular route to collect all three and return is about 3.4km (2.1 miles). The paths should be OK for terrain buggies but with some steep bits & muddy spots difficult for traditional pushchairs.
Co-ordinates of Madcaches 2 & 3 are given in Madcache 1. The location of Madcache 1 is protected by the transposition cipher below. There are 12 columns x 6 rows. The column order is determined by a keyword - Dorchester! But, of course, it's the fictional Dorchester of Hardy's Wessex…
