Geocache Description:

Recently someone approached me at an event and said "Scoobert, your caches are like Dog Years...you should earn credit for seven regular caches for each Scoobert cache you do!".

I was rather honored so I thought a cache by that name was in order. This one definately fit the bill and even moreso since I was accompanied by MonkeyDawg, GeoRana, 3-carver and MonkeyDawg's sheep dog, Lyn. Lyn was very ambitious and led the way for a while until she discovered it was far easier to walk in our tracks (the snow was much deeper than Lyn was tall ).

Lake Margaret has always been one of my favorite Alpine Lake destinations, but I had never visited in the winter - until of course today . It was a beautiful hike and once we broke off the Kirkwood cross country tracks we didn't see any other tracks the entire way. Then again who else would be crazy enough to trek through 36 inches of fresh and slightly sun weighted down snow .

Lots of emphasis on winter conditions because that's when this one was hidden, but this is also an incredible summer hike. The hike is relatively easy with not much elevation differential except at the very beginning and very end. If you go when wildflowers are in full bloom it will simply be unforgettable. However you'll definately need your mosquito repellant.
To offset the easier summer hike, those who attempt in the summer will receive a slightly tougher challenge reaching the cache. Obviously it's not on the ground. .
You'll get some great shots of Lake Margaret up here and I would expect you would be totally clear of any muggle interference.

A couple of tips if you go in the winter:

  • Don't go alone! For two reasons - one of course being safety and two - unless you're on the order of an Olympic conditioned athlete, you will need to split the duties of blazing the trail to the cache with at least one other person.
  • Probably not in your best interest to go right after a cold, high volume snow storm.
  • You'll most likely have to negotiate some creek crossings. It would be helpful to have high boots on or be a good tight rope walker.

(Holy cow, I hope I didn't take 49 years from Lyn today !)
