Geocache Description:

As this cache is located near the summit of a mountain, one should expect a good 2 to 4 hour hike to reach it. The altitude change is from about 800m to 1950m.

Begin in the Austrian town of Hallstatt at 500m above sea level. From there, you may hike all the way up to the summit, or you may take the tram up to 850m where there is an entrance to the salt mines (hence the "Salzig" part of the name). The hike from there will take from 2-4 hours, depending upon your stamina. I went up with some good friends from Austria named Flo, Tobi, and Steff, and we were joined by Dorli & Steff's dog named "Mister" (hence the "Hund" part of the name). These guys had climbed this mountain many times and didn't seem too winded. I was hurtin', but I don't think I slowed them down too much. I was relieved to hear that their legs were as sore as mine for the next few days.
Since there are many possible trails, I'll give the hint that you're looking for the summit with the large cross placed on top of it. From the summit you will have a brilliant view of the Hallstaetter See, and also of the Dachstein Glacier. The cache is not right at the summit, but slightly lower. Beware the sheep!
Hallstatt is a nice alpine lake town, so you'll find good camping, pensions, hotels and restaurants there. We camped in Hallstadt, but I've heard that the camping in nearby Obertraun is better.

At the beginning, the cache contains a speaking watch (speaks only German!), a disposable camera, a logbook with a pen, a beer bottlecap with a 10 ATS coin, and a pair of large sunglasses. You should bring your own pen and/or pencil because the cold air might render the pen useless. I didn't have a pencil with me, so if you visit the cache, please bring one to leave there.

OK, Viel Spass!
