Alexauken 3-The Birds Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

LBREWSTER: I am archiving the three Alexauken caches. Alexauken 1 The Spring House was buried under a giant oak that fell on it. Alexauken 2 The Creek was MIA. Alexauken 3 The Birds was in good shape but without the others caches no one would walk all this way. It is a lovely area with stream, birds, flowers and quiet. Maybe someday there will be another series here.

Geocache Description:

NOTE: THIS CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT THE POSTED COORDINATES

Alexauken Creek Wildlife Management Area is located in Hunterdon County and comprises 400+ acres of woods, fields, streams and a pond. This is a spectacular area, especially in the spring, with its wildflowers, birds, and great scenery. It is definitely an area worth more exploration.

The first owners of the land were the Leni Lenape Indians whose name means "The Original People." Their tribal divisions in this part of Hunterdon County were Turtle and Turkey. Later the English settlers used the water power from Alexauken Creek for a saw mill, a flax seed mill and a grist mill. More about the history of this area can be found at (visit link)
Topo map at (visit link) .

Parking is available at N40° 23.795 W74° 52.217
(There is another lot on Rt. 179 for access to the northern part of the wma, which we haven’t explored.)

This is a Wildlife Management Area which means hunting is permitted. There are many deer stands in the area that appear to get used. We have also encountered turkey hunters. Check dates for hunting and wear bright orange or go on a Sunday when hunting is not allowed.

Alexauken has an abundance of wildlife. Perhaps the birds can help you find your way to Alexauken 3-The Birds.

Bluebird, Cardinal, Indigo bunting, Eagle, Egret
Eider, Blue jay, Ibis, Catbird, Accipiter
