A cache place in memory of a 3-year-old's historic story - a story of a child abuse victim who died in 1920s in Argillite that garnered headlines across the nation.
Mary Magdaline Pitts of Argillite made headlines across the country when she became the victim of deadly child abuse. Now a part of Greenup County's history, the little girl was buried at Riverview Cemetery in Greenup Dec. 29, 1927, after a funeral attended by thousands - the largest such service for child ever attended, historians say.
The girl's death brought national attention to child abuse. Her parents Robert Pitts and Marie Frazier were convicted of this crime and sent to prison. There is a book about Mary - Another Time and place available at the Greenup Co. Library, I have put a copy of it in the cache, this is not a trade item, but please read it while visiting the cache.
