Red Tail Rim Trail. Say that three times quickly! This is a new trail in the Modoc National Forest cleared by the California Conservation Corps in 2004-2006. It is designated for non motorized use, open to equestrians, hikers, and bicycles. Total length is 17 miles.
The trail ranges from 4,700 feet in the sage, and climbs to Manzanita Lookout at just over 7,000 feet along its 17 mile route. The Forest Service notes that this ridge is subject to lightning strikes during summer. There is no potable water. Seasonal conditions make some short sections difficult to follow, and we found fields of wildflowers to be our challenge.
Trailheads are marked on Highway 299 8 miles north of Adin, near Manzanita Lookout, and just north of Ash Creek Camground 7 miles east of Adin on Forest Highway 22. Occasional forest roads cross, but are not marked at this time.
We opted to bicycle the trail starting from Ash Creek, and would rate this climb as a strenuous intermediate experience. Parts of the tread are soft, and required pushing the bike. The entire day was a delight full of views and wildlife encounters. Our brochure suggests starting your journey up at Manzanita Lookout, and we will do so next time!
We hid an ammo box at a spectacular viewpoint, and it is full of goodies for hikers and bicyclists. FTF pin is there, along with a bonus prize. Replace the coverings as found, and the hint will stay valid. A shorter day can be had by following Forest Road 22 up onto the rim from Adin, and intersect Road 39N16 to N41 12.318 W120 47.954 . The trail is marked with cairns, and a pleasant hike of about a mile will give you a good taste of this fun trail.
Enjoy, be careful, and post your Red Tail Rim tales here.
