Geocache Description:

If you have been caching for a while, you’ve noticed some caches that keep popping up that you haven’t done yet, but you’ll get to them (someday!). My goal for 2007 was to find all the caches in Maine that were placed in 2001, the first year caches were placed in the state. I figured that these were the caches I’d been seeing the longest, and there weren’t THAT many of them, and seeing how I’d already done half of them in my travels, it didn’t seem like that big a job. Turns out that I’d done the easy ones. The rest involved a kayak paddle off the mid-coast, a ferry ride (then 4 mile walk each way) to an island that was walkable at low tide, etc. I finally completed my goal in June of this year and thought it might make a good challenge to other cachers. These are the historic caches for our state, starting with the lighthouse represented on our 2005 coin and travelling from Kittery to Downeast and into the western mountains. To complete this challenge, you need to visit all of the Maine caches that were placed in 2001. As of the cache placement, there are 24 and there can never be more, only less as time goes on and caches are archived. All current 2001 caches are needed to complete the challenge. If a cache is “temporarily unavailable” you need to wait for the cache owner to re-enable it, or contact the cache placer to find out if it is going to be archived or not. If it’s archived, then it’s off the list and you have one less to do. If this is an issue, email me and I’ll look into it for that cache. The easiest way I’ve found to see what caches I had remaining was to: 1. Select “my account” from the left side of GCs home page. 2. Select “List newest in Maine” from the right side of the next page. 3. At the top right of the next page where you see “7 8 9 10]> >> Next” click on the “>>”. This will take you to the oldest caches in Maine. As of the posting, this was on pages 104 and 105. If you are a premium member there will be check marks next to the ones you’ve done. Good way to track your progress. This cache is rated a 5/5. The hardest cache rating in this list is a 2.5 difficulty and a 3 terrain, however you DO need a boat for more than one of these caches, which gives an automatic 5 terrain, and due to the number of locations and distances involved, I rated the difficulty as a 5 as well. . The final cache is a 1.5/2 rating and you can park within 100’ of the cache. It is located within 3/4 miles of the published location. As with other challenge caches, you may have others with you at the final cache, but they will not be allowed to log the cache as a find. If they do, their log will be deleted. Once you’ve completed the caches, bookmark your caches and post a note, or post a note with the completion dates of each cache, or email me that list. Once I’ve verified that you’ve finished all the caches, I’ll email you with the coords to the final cache. The final is located in Bangor and is a standard ammo box with assorted goodies. For the FTF, there is a FTF TB (that is in action and needs to go to another cache) and a 2005 Maine Geocoin, #1234. I thought I’d kept coin #2001, but apparently not. As of the cache placement (7/7/07) nobody else has found all remaining (unarchived) 2001 caches. You may count the ones you’ve already logged, and some people are CLOSE to finishing now. Let the race for FTF begin… CONGRATULATIONS TO BRDAD FOR FTF!!!
