Geocache Description:

This cache is NOT at the posted coordinates.

What's more appropriate for metro's smallest cemetery (Yeadon Family Cemetery) than a micro cache? Remnants of the Yeadon quarries of Spryfield may still be seen today in the great mass of stone along North West Arm Drive in Spryfield, Williams Lake Road, Colpitt Lake Road, and Terrence Bay. The granite and ironstone (schistose slate) was quarried and then taken by barge across the North West Arm to downtown Halifax where it was the stone of choice for many Halifax buildings of the mid 1800's. Stone from the Yeadon quarries may still be seen today in the Parade wall, St Mary's Basilica, in customs house and in monuments and storefronts in Halifax. The large granite formations were quarried by Yeadon descendents for nearly 100 years. William Yeadon Jr (1827-1909), and six generations of Yeadon's, is buried just off Herring Cove Road, in a small family burial ground since 1849.
