TRAMWAYS AND WALKWAYS (5) - PIT STOP
How Geocaching Works
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
This cache is part of our Tramways and walkways series, however this one is not within sight of Haytor
The old tramway once served five quarries on Haytor Down, and today it provides about two miles of fairly easy walking with glorious views. The line, the first railway in Devon, was opened in 1820 and was used to transport the quarried stone to the canal at Teigngrace. The remains of the old granite rail are visible along the length of this walk. This cache can be found near where the tramway actually comes to an end in Holwell Quarry, away from the hustle and bustle of Haytor and it is a beautiful place to stop a while. It is hidden off the main path and may be a bit of a squeeze. We have provided co-ords for the path you will need to go down to get near the cache. Once down the path you are looking for three large rocks to your left hand side - if you have done any of our other caches in this series you may well have a good idea of what to expect for the cache`'s hiding place! We have also listed the co-ords for an old stone shelter that we discovered just before you reach our cache; you will need to leave the tramway slightly but only by a few feet.
