How Geocaching Works

Waiting for the ferry can be very frustrating especially if you have just missed it or are stuck in a long queue. What better way to while away the time than to look for a cache.
The Windermere Ferry drags its way east and west all day every day except during extremely windy weather and when it is out of commission for servicing. The nearest parking is the large car park to the north of the Ferry road. A new system for 2014 is in place which, I believe, gives you free parking for up to 20 minutes; although I haven't tried it! There is free roadside parking in Bowness (if you can find a space) and a nice walk across Cockshott Point near the lake shore to Ferry Nab.
Please be aware that this can be a very busy area so take care when retrieving and replacing the cache that you are not seen. This is the fifth replacement of this popular cache since the original 'Regular' cache was placed in December 2007. Arborial vandals from South Lakeland District Council demolished the original hiding place with a chainsaw and in early spring 2014, the second hiding place was also lost. However, theclarkes had a cunning plan and in May 2014 the cache was replaced in a new guise about 10 metres from the original location. This disappeared in winter 2014 and again in December 2015 when the lake rose to unprecedented levels to the height of the cache. We have replaced it again and we hope it will give a lot of pleasure this year. Please be gentle with the cache. You can retrieve and sign the log without removing the cache from its resting place. We hope you enjoy it.
