Geocache Description:

This simple multi-cache is meant to commemorate Aylmer's F3 category tornado that caused so much damage on August x, 19xx. F-3 Winds gusted from 251 to 330 km/h. Roofs and walls were torn off and cars were moved.

Just after 3:00PM on this day, the tornado ripped through most of the downtown area. The storm touched down near Les Galeries d'Aylmer and traveled northeast across the Jardins Lavigne and Pilon subdivisions (east of Wilfrid-Lavigne Boulevard) before turning east and dissipating near a wooded area near the current Quebec Route 148. 385 houses sustained damages, 12 being totally destroyed and 40 being heavily damaged. 250 families had to be evacuated. Miraculously, there were no fatalities, but several people were injured. One elementary school sustained heavy damage as a large tree fell through a window of a classroom. Since the tornado occurred in early August, and before the start of the new school year, there were no casualties.

It was one of the strongest tornadoes to occur in Canada since the F4 tornado that struck Edmonton in 1987, the strongest to occur in the National Capital Region, and one of the strongest modern day tornadoes to hit the province of Quebec.

This was one of the events that led government-agency Environment Canada to improve its warning system and radar in order to quickly detect the possible presence of a tornado in a thunderstorm cell. During that event, there were no tornado warnings issued for the region.

Originally, we had wanted to retrace the tornado's path, but new construction in this area is hindering this plan. Instead, a smaller multi has been undertaken.

There is a plaque at the posted coordinates. Take the day in August and subtract it from the minutes of the northern coordinates. Subtract an additional 73 from those northern coordinates. Take the last 2 digits of the year and subtract them from the western coordinates. Add 37 to these western coordinates. This will give you the coordinates to the cache. As it is a micro, please bring your own writing implement. Stealth will be required.
