Geocache Description:

Caution: This cache has not been listed on the Hungarian geocaching website. It's available only on the geocaching.com.

The Pointed Tower (12 Liszt Ferenc Promenade, Vác) is the north-most corner turret of the town wall from the Middle Age.

Vác is a beautiful town in Hungary 35 km north from Budapest on the left bank of the Danube River at the east gate of the Danube-Bend. The territory is populated from the Bronze Age. The town is seated at the foot of the Naszály Mountain, and is an important ferry. The settlement which was established after the Hungarian Conquest, when the first Hungarians arrived at the Carpathian Basin in 896, is one of the earliest pontifical centres. The city is considered to be nearly a thousand years old, it is the seat of the Episcopate of Vác founded by King Saint Stephen. The town was destroyed three times. At first Tatars burned up the city and killed its inhabitants in the spring of 1241. After the Mongol invasion the bishop of Vác settled Germans to the city. A flourishing, prosperous and peaceful period followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Vác was one of the important cities of Hungary. In 1485 the city was the place of the diet convened by King Mathias Corvinus. However, in 1542 the Ottomans led by Jahjapasaoglu Muhammad Pasha was occupied Vác and put an end to this great period. The wars under the Turkish years destroyed the Gothic-Renaissance city. Vác was liberated in 1686. Reconstructions followed immediately but the Castle and the walls of Vác laid in ruins. The stones of walls had been used for repairs the buildings of population. Hegyes-torony (Pointed tower) is the last conserved section of the fortification built after the Mongol invasion. This is the north-most corner turret of the town wall. It is part of a residential building, with cylinder-shape and cone-shaped roof.
