Geocache Description:

Another cache placed for the Lookout Challenge cache hunt.

Vinegar Hill Cache
N 44:42.838
W 118:33.693
Elevation: 8136 Feet
Container: Ammo can

After work with nothing to do so I went out to Vinegar Hill to the old lookout tower location.

39.25 miles from downtown John Day.
16.8 miles from Austin Jct.
13.25 miles on Forest road 2010, a washboard covered gravel road that turns to dirt 7.5 miles up. There is a turn around - parking spot 7 miles up. DO NOT GO PAST THIS SPOT WITH YOUR TOWN CAR UNLESS YOU CAN BACK UP OR DON'T GIVE A R.A. ABOUT YOUR RIDES PAINT/UNDERCARRIAGE.

5.7 miles from the top is the magic number. This is where the rock runs out. Well, the gravel rock anyway. The oversize starts here and goes most of the way to the top.

You will need a four wheel drive, a off road buggy, dirt bike, mountain bike or shanks mare to get in and out. I was in 4 wheel drive BOTH directions. Low range and first gear in lots of places. If it rains, snows or a cow lifts it tail in the road, it will get worse.

Anyway, this is a great place to get away from it all. Even with smoke in the air, I could see Mount Jefferson, the Elkhorns, The Wallowa Mtn's, Dixie Mtn. and a flock of other knobs.

The Bench mark is missing but there is a rebar with a plastic cap in place as well as reference # 2. There is also a Summit Log under the Red Coffee can.

Also, take a look at what they used to anchor the tower with. Looks like old mine cart track chunks all chinked together with concrete.

Be careful looking for this cache as I hid it where no muggles should go but a cacher will. Please replace it back deep and covered. Yes, it will fit if you work it right.

  • Summit logThis is the Summit log. Look under and in the GLASS jar. Poor container from a cachers standpoint.
