Geocache Description:

Few cities have had the personal seal of a single artist so strongly impressed as Ljubljana, the birthplace of the architect Joze Plecnik (1872-1957). Over three and half decades, he transformed the former provincial town into the capital of the Slovenian nation. His creativity is evident in the building of National and University Library (NUK)and in the Krizanke Monastery.

In 1895 the building of Library suffered severe damage from the earthquake so that it had to be pulled down. The NUK was finished before the beginning of the Second World War, in 1941. But in 1944 a Nazi aeroplane crashed into it. After the war the building was repaired.
The building is a four-storeyed four-wing in the shape of an irregular rectangle, with two small inner yards. The exterior surface is made up from various materials such as bricks and stone blocks, some of them smooth, others rough, some large and some small. In the interior you can be surprised by a number of excellent architectural details, made of marble, bronce or wood.
Just behind the Library is the complex of Krizanke (the monastery with the curch from 13th century - the Order of the Cross). It was altered also by architect Plenick from 1951 till 1957. After the alternation the complex became a center for cultural activities. According to his design, the porch of the lapidarium is supported by columns from the arcades of the Ducal Palace demolished by the earthquake in 1895. It was his last major work, and his devotion can be sensed in the phrases written playfully on the façades.

The cache is placed near the National Library building and Krizanke Monastery. The cache is micro size (4x7x1 cm).
