Geocache Description:

A gentle stroll across Alpine heathland brings you to a quaint hut located in a peaceful valley.

Brumbies are often seen in this area.
This hut doesn't see many visitors - surprising considering how beautiful the area is.

Not much known about the origins of this hut, It was once a survey camp for the Hydro back in the 1940's.

There are some old photos in the hut,
If anyone can provide more info - email me and I will include it in the cache page,

2) "I was looking around the geocacash.com site and chanced upon your cach post.re Youngs Hut I presume.
I was the person who placed the photos up on the wall. The 1950 one came from The State Library the 1945 photo was given to me by a friend in Wodonga
also I can tell you who made the curtain :)
The hut was dragged by sled, I believe from Dinner Plain there used to be a track to Youngs Tops, as you say there is not much known about the Hut. If you have any info on Young's let me know.
The Border Bushwalking Club has maintained the Hut for the past 28 years, our last effort was to install the wood heater"

3) I've got some information on Young's Hut which you may find useful to use on your cache page, or just for general knowledge. The following is taken from the book 'The Huts Of The High Plains' by Fiona Magnussen.

Osborne Young is believed to have built the original Young's Hut near the old yards, higher up on the hill from the present hut in the 1880's. The first hut was built with snowgum posts and the walls were made from weatherboards cut on Paling Spur. The fireplace was made from basalt stones, the hut had a dirt floor and a shingle roof.

The hut was a two room affair, with a bunkroom and a living room. In 1923, Charlie Rundell (jnr) put in a new floor and helped Charlie McNamara to cover the roof with iron that he had obtained from the abandoned Cassilas Gold Mining Company Power Station on the Cobungra River. After heavy snows taht year the hut started to lean downhill, so big logs were propped under the eaves to hold the hut up. When these logs rotted away some years later, the hut eventually collapsed.

All that remains today is a pile of basalt rocks from the fireplace, some old iron and timber, approx 200 meters northwest of the present hut.

The present Youngs Hut was built in 1928 y the SEC and is of similar size and design to the present Kelly's Hut. The hut was prefabricated and believed to have been packed in (on horseback) from Mt Hotham, most likely using the route from Dinner Plain or Brandy Creek, across the Cobungra River and up Paling Spur.

The hut has timber weatherboard walls, a corrugated iron roof and an external rock and iron chimney. There are several windows in the hut and it is believed that it also once contained a slow combustion stove.

During SEC research days, a number of tents were pitched east of the hut as extra accommodation.

The McNamara's bought the hut from the SEC in 1952, in conjunction with Les Watts of Cobungra Station.

In recent years, The Border Bushwalking Club has undertaken maintenance on the hut, putting in wall lining, installing the front verandah and the rear woodshed and repairing furniture. A bush toilet is located some 30 meters east of the hut.

Water is available from the creek running near the hut but may not be drinkable after a prolonged dry period.

This hut was not damaged in the 2003 fires, despite severe fire activity in the Cobungra River Valley.
