A short walk on grassed paths to the south west corner of Windmill
Field where the panoramic views and the local flora make this an
interesting site. The earthcache is situated within Cleadon Hill
Nature Reserve.
The total United Kingdom resource of magnesian limestone grassland
is limited to 279 hectares; with two-thirds being found in east
Durham and Tyne and Wear. Like other lowland calcareous grasslands,
magnesian limestone grassland is important for its botanic and
invertebrate interest. Magnesian limestone grassland supports many
species which are nationally scarce or uncommon. Completely unique
to east Durham and Tyne and Wear is the magnesian limestone
grassland community containing the Blue Moor-grass and Small Scabious community (Sesleria caerulea -
Scabiosa columbaria). This community is not found anywhere else in
the world and is both nationally and internationally important.
To Claim This Cache:
In order to claim this cache you need to:
1. Upload a photograph of your GPS and/or you at the small
limestone crag found at the published co-ordinates. Sorry, but
photographs of just the crag will not be acceptable as they are
available on the internet.
2. Email the answer to the following question through the
geocaching.com profile - How many horizontal layers of rock can you
count in the rock face?
Please note that if your log to claim this cache does not contain
an appropriate photograph then you log will be deleted without any
contact from me. Unfortunately this is necessary because although a
cacher had said "picture to follow" for one of my other earthcaches
- it took a few reminder emails before a photograph was added.
Please do not put your answer in your log entry on the webpage. Any
logs that contain the answers will be deleted so that following
geocachers can complete the educational task unaided.
Remember to look at www.earthcache.org where you can see if you
will qualify for either a bronze, silver, gold, or platinum pin
badge depending on how many earthcaches you have visited and/or
developed.
