kennysart: This one has been found over 700 times and has had a great run, but it seems to go missing to often now, been replaced almost ten times over the years so I think it is time to retire and let someone else try one in this area. There is a Earthcache here though. Thanks for the great run!

Geocache Description:

Where do carnivorous plants grow? In the swamp of course!

There are some very nice paths and walk-ways and there is absolutly no need to venture off any of the paved paths. When confronted with a choice, take the path to the right.

The leaf of Darlingtonia is unique: it is tubular, and contains a fluid that digests trapped insects. The upper part of the leaf is modified for the trapping function. The end of the leaf is hooded. There is a circular opening through which insects can fly into the hood. So why would they do so? One reason: on the two flag-like structures, there are glands that secrete sugary nectar, such as flies and other insects like to feed on. There are more nectar glands inside the hood, so an insect tends to progress right into the hood. Collecting Darlingtonia samples is illegal in Oregon. Besides its parking area and boardwalk, Darlingtonia State Natural Site offers a small picnic area. Nearby scenery includes a lush assortment of vegetation that includes rhododendron, spruce, cedar and shore pine. Never walk through the plants off the path or leave the board walk.
