Geocache Description:

Dansk

English

Close to Charlottenlund Palace lies an old well preserved cooling house. (See picture above) In the old days there was only one possibility if you wanted cooled drinks or ice desserts in the summer time: You must hide ice from the winter; buried in the ground or placed in a special building in shadowy surroundings.

“The Legend of the Blue Man”
The building also carry a tragic and not documented story from the year 1872: One of the employee did by accident lock himself in the cooling house. Exactly 24 hours later the man was found unconscious and completely blue. He recovered but his skin colour remained blue. A Swedish and a German doctor suggested that he was to be exhibited! A year later he proposed to a common girl and received the answer “No one wants to marry a blue man”. In sorrow he walked to the sea, to commit suicide by drowning himself. 17 years ago a painter (with the permission from "Skovstyrelsen") painted a huge beech blue; perhaps the artist was inspired by history?

Happy hunting!
