Big Matt and Shell: Well, the weekend has come to an end, all of the trackables have been logged. It is time to close off the cache. I'd like to thank everyone that attended for helping to make our first event cache such a successful one! The thing that Shell and I enjoy the most about Geocaching is the people that we have met, many of whom we fell like we have known for a long time!

Thanks to the Gong cachers, The Rats and Odee McPodie for making the trek out to the ACT to camp with us. We had a ball and so did Molly and Kostya! I'm sure Odee slept well all the way home!

To the ACT cachers for coming and spending the night with us, it was good to be able to sit around the fire and swap a few stories, get a few hints on caches. MBO, every time I see you on the bike you still amaze me the places you ride to!

And to the Dubbo muggles that joined us thanks for your patience as usual while we went off in search of plastic containers in the bush! One of these days you will join us!

See you all again next year perhaps there may even be a few more local cachers that will roll out the camping gear and join us!

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the inaugural ACT Gone Bush Weekend

This is a dog freindly event!

This event will start at 5pm on the 24th April 2008. The plan is to be back in either Yass or Canberra by no later than 12pm on the Sunday 27th April to allow cachers time to travel home as most people who are coming are from a distance away! For those who are travelling and can't make the first night we will be heading off from this location at 10am on the 25th and heading further into the Brindabellas. Check the additional waypoints for further information

The starting location has changed!

The published location is the starting point of a 4WD and camping weekend. It is the Blue Range Hut camping area. Cost of camping is $7.50 per person per night. The location for the first night has been chosen to allow the more tractionally disadvantaged cachers to be able to come, swap some stories and spend the night. The road into here is dirt but all 2WD vehicles should be able to get here. I have booked camping space for 14 people at the Blue Range Hut camping ground, first in first served. There will be 4 of us (and two dogs) so that leaves 10 spare spots. If I see numbers getting over this I will try to find more space.

You must spend at least one night to be able to claim this as a smiley! Any people wanting to get back and enjoy the Anzac Day parades will also have time after spending a relaxing night in the bush.

The camping location for the second and third night has been chosen and it is the Micalong Creek Camping area near Wee Jasper it is somewhat more remote and will involve a few km's of 4WD to get there! (There is a soft option for any people who do not have a 4WD). Cost of camping is $7.50 per person per night. The third day will be a bit more serious 4WDing passing areas like McIntyre's Hut, Mt Coree, Doctors Flat Rd that would be only suitable for 4wd's with low range. This will be a loop trip returning to the camp ground from the previous night. Soft roaders could make a trip to Tumut and explore some of the many caches there!

Caches I am planning on visiting at this stage will include:

  • GC160ND - Azzurra Appennini by SecretSquirrel-BJC
  • GCHAMM - Vertigo by The Hill 4 (Depends who comes)
  • GC16PH8 - Berhati-Hati by t_reez
  • GC17F66 - Hume Sawmill by herca
  • GCHBP5 - Lonely Cache by phantoms
  • GC17F7C - Capital glimpses by djblrts

I now have a track file of the rough intended area in GPX format that can be loaded into Ozi or Google Earth. If anyone wants a copy please drop me an email and I’ll send it to you. Big Matt and Shell

As usual with bush camping you must BYO everything. Enough drinking water, food, fuel, recovery gear etc. We hope to see you all there!
