Valpovo
The area of the current town of 11,000 was already inhabited in the 2nd century AD. The name of the Roman settlement was Jovalium. The medieval settlement at the bank of River Karasica was first mentioned in the 14th century, as the property of Iván Sólyagh. in 1397, after Sólyagh's death, Sigmund, the king of Hungary, gave the property to János Maróti.

Prandau-Normann Castle
The construction of the fortress was started by János Maróti and it was close to being finished by the time of his death in 1431. The cylindrical tower and part of the outer wall originate from this period. These are the oldest parts of the castle complex. The interior of the northern part of the tower contains late Gothic stone doorjambs, window frames, a spiral staircase and stone benches.
János's son, László built the chapel to honor Hungarian King Saint László and to provide a burial place for the Maróti family. The Maróti family owned the fortress until 1476 when the family died out.
In 1512 the owner is Imre Perényi, Palatine of Hungary. He renovated the fortress in Renaissance style and added an open porch.
On June 22nd, 1543, after a heroic defense, and after 3,173 stone cannon balls hit the stronghold ruining its walls, the fort was finally taken over by the Ottoman army led by Bey Murat. For a short period it was reconquered by Miklós Pálffy in 1599, but was soon lost and stayed under Turkish rule until 1687.
In 1721 the fort was given to Baron Peter Prandau, and the agricaltural property around it to Graf Normann Ehrenfels.
After a conflagration at the end of 1801, the complex was rebuilt, enlarged, and furnished in lavish Baroque style, turning it to a modern castle from the outdated fort.
The caste was seriously damaged in both world wars.
Currently, it is used by various civil organizations (youth club, etc.)

It can be visited on weekdays, between 7am and 3pm.
