Patroller: This cache was severely damaged during logging operations during the fall of 2014, and then covered with snow. I located it today and removed the cache until I can discuss with my supervisor whether we want to reinstitute the cache, and if so, where we would locate it so as to not be affected by future planned logging, or winter ski trail operations. Until we make that determination, this geocache has been archived.

Geocache Description:

In Sand Dunes State Forest, we placed a historical cache but the real gold could be anywhere!

There is a legend that the US Cavalry buried a payroll in the Sand Dunes area almost 150 years ago. (The entire story, from the county historical society, is in the cache.) You won't even have dig to find it!
