Silokalliot ovat sileitä kalliopintoja joiden pinnassa näkyy selviä
uurteita.
Tuskin kiven pinta kuitenkaan taikaiskusta tuollaiseksi muuttuu?
syntyneistä syvemmistä uurteista on vastuussa karkeampi maa-aines.
Annetuissa koordinaateissa sijaitseva silokallio on syntynyt
edellisen Veikseliksi kutsutun jääkauden aikana yli 10000 vuotta
sitten.
Silokallion pinnasta ja sen ympäristöstä voidaan päätellä
kallion yli kulkeneen jäätikön kulkusuunta. Linjan jota pitkin jää
on kulkenut, voi luonnollisestikin päätellä kallion pinnassa
olevien uurteiden suunnasta. Varsinainen kulkusuunta selviää taas
tarkastelemalla hieman paikan muuta ympäristöä. Kulkusuunnan
vastakkaiselta puolelta (eli jos kuvitellaan jään liikkuneen
vasemmalta oikealle, on suojasivu oikealla) löytyy usein ns.
suojasivu.
Voidaksesi logata tämän geokohteen tulee sinun suorittaa
seuraavat tehtävät:
- Päättele jäätikön kulkusuunta väli-ilmansuuntien
tarkkuudella.
- Tutki kalliopintaa yhdistäen havaintosi annettuihin
taustatietoihin ja kerro mitä voit päätellä olosuhteista
silokallion synnyn ja tämän päivän välillä.
- Ota itsestäsi kuva itsestäsi suurin piirtein annetuissa
koordinaateissa
pureman.
Glaciated rocks are smooth rock surfaces with distinctive grooves
on them. These rock surfaces are a not a rare sight in Finland and
perhaps you've even noticed them, but have you given any thought on
how they are formed? Surely they don't become like that by
magic.
Glaciated rocks are born during ice ages, during which a glacier
moves over the rock surface and grinds the surface smooth and
leaves the grooves on it. Ice itself of course doesn't erode the
rock, but rocks and sediment stuck to the bottom of the glacier
does. This process is called glacial abrasion. Small pebbles and
sand grind the surface smooth and larger rocks are responsible of
the grooves. The grooves are called striations. The glacial rock
that is located in the given coordinates was born during the last
ice age (named Veiksel) over 10000 years ago.
The direction of the moving glacier can be concluded from the
surface of the glaciated rock and its surroundings. The line which
the glacier has moved can be of course seen from the striations.
The direction on this line can be found out by looking around at
the surrounding area. From the side opposite to the moving ice
there can usually be found a steep descent (if you imagine the ice
moving from left to right the descent is on the right), which has
been saved from the force of the moving ice unlike the usually
almost flat rock.
The surface of the glaciated rock can be so smooth that it
appears almost shiny and polished. This phenomenon is called
glacial polish. The polish will be lost during time though, if the
surface is not protected by deposition or water. So a polished
surface indicates that the abrasion has happened quite recently (on
a geological timescale) or the surface has been protected from
weathering processes.
To be able to log this earthcache you must carry out the
following tasks:
- Conclude the direction of the movement of the glacial ice with
precision of half-cardinal points.
- Study the surface of the rock and combine your findings with
the background information and tell me what you can conclude about
the prevailing conditions after the abrasion process.
- Take a photo of yourself at the given coordinates.
- Send your answers to questions 1 and 2 using
this link and wait for a permission to log this earthcache.
Attach the photo you took of yourself to your log. Logs made
without permission or missing a photo will be deleted.
Note: The tic population of Pappilanniemi is known to
carry the bacteria causing the Lyme disease. You don't have to go
to the bushes to find the information to answer all the questions,
but if you decide to explore please keep this in mind and if you
get bit seek medical attention.
