This, my second cache in my home town of Wem, is in the form of an ammo box and as the title suggests is hidden near the newly transformed tannery.
Wem is a small market town in North Shropshire alongside the banks of the River Roden with a traditional village heritage and atmosphere. Surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful rural countryside, the area offers real peace and tranquility. Wem is filled with pretty Georgian buildings and delightful small shops and the pace of life in this quaint area is typical of a small town in the country.
Like most small towns, Wem had its own tannery, a workplace where skins and hides are tanned. The main tanning agent was derived from oak bark and chippings, and was used both in that form and in a liquid form called 'ooze.' When this was combined with the other agents required, such as sulphuric acid and lime, one can imagine the pervading atmosphere. The Tanner was an important figure in that he bought the local hides and bark and sold the leather to shoemakers, keeping the local populace well shod.
The long awaited transformation of the Grade II listed building is currently underway. Developers, Winnington Ltd, are creating new apartments within the existing building, along with the addition of a contemporary extension and a separate new build block of apartments.
