The motto "I Will" was coined after the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. After the fire devastated much of the city the people of Chicago came together to rebuild it ~ a phenomenal task! The "can do anything" spirit continues on! The City of Chicago is in the process of planning, proposing and accomplishing a new feat ~ to WIN the BID for the 2016 Olympics! What a shock to be eliminated from the Olympic Bid so quickly.
The Chicago Flag reflects many historical events of this great city. One of the red points on the fourth star carries the meaning of the "I Will" motto. The fourth star was added to the Chicago Flag in 1933. This star represents the Century of Progress held in 1933 (my mom attended this event and I have a souvenir!) and the points refer to bragging rights:
- the World's Third Largest City
- Chicago's Latin Motto (Urbs in horto - City in a garden)
- Chicago's "I Will" Motto
- Great Central Marketplace
- Wonder City
- Convention City
**At the intersection of Harlem and Grand Ave. stands a Monument to the "I Will" motto. The cache is nearby.
